Description
Sowing and transplanting: in the ground or in seedbeds, transplanting seedlings when they are 10-15 cm tall. Short-day varieties: sow in summer-autumn, transplant in September-October, harvest in early spring-early summer.
Long-day varieties: plant out in February-March; in seedbeds in December-February, transplant in March-April, harvest in summer. These are the varieties to be stored for consumption in autumn-winter.
Spacing: 20-40 cm between rows, 15-20 cm within rows.
Tips: when the leaves of onions for winter consumption have turned yellow, pull up the bulb and leave it to dry on the ground in full sun for 5-7 days.Store in a dry, well-ventilated place.
Growing onions in rows next to parsley or celery helps to keep onion flies away.Seeds required: in seedbeds 3 g per square metre; when planting out 40-50 g per 100 square metres.
