The Hardy Kiwi 'Kokuwa' is a prized self-fertile Japanese mini kiwi variety, valued for its productivity, hardiness and distinctive sweet, refreshing flavour with delicate lemon notes. Its small oval fruits, around 2 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, ripen between late September and October and can be eaten whole, skin and all, as the thin skin is crisp and perfectly edible.
This variety begins to crop as early as the second or third year after planting, delivering abundant and consistent harvests. It is a highly cold-hardy plant, able to withstand temperatures down to approximately -22 °C, which makes it suitable even for areas with harsh winters.
The Hardy Kiwi 'Kokuwa' develops vigorous climbing stems, ideal for growing over pergolas, trellises, fences, arches and other supports. It can also be trained easily along wires stretched between posts, both in the garden and in commercial plantings.
For best results it needs a sunny, warm position sheltered from the wind, in fertile, moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
