Clematis: Complete Growing and Care Guide

Clematis are beautiful climbing plants prized for their abundant and spectacular flowers. They are ideal for decorating pergolas, arches, fences, walls and trellises, adding colour and vertical interest to the garden.

Position and soil

Light: Clematis grow well in a bright position, from full sun to partial shade. In areas with very hot summers, it is advisable to protect the base and roots from excessive direct sunlight.

Soil: the ideal soil should be fertile, rich in organic matter, moisture-retentive but, above all, well drained. Clematis do not tolerate waterlogged soil, which can lead to root problems.

Support: as climbing plants, Clematis need a suitable structure to climb on. Pergolas, arches, fences, trellises and climbing nets are all suitable. The support should be stable and appropriate for the mature size and vigour of the variety.

Planting Clematis

When to plant: Clematis can be planted at different times of the year as long as the soil is not frozen or excessively wet. Spring and autumn are generally the most suitable planting seasons.

Spacing: allow approximately 1–1.5 metres between plants, adjusting the distance according to the vigour and mature size of the variety.

Planting: prepare a sufficiently wide planting hole and incorporate mature compost or well-rotted organic matter into the soil. Water thoroughly after planting to encourage good establishment.

Watering

Clematis need a reasonably consistent supply of moisture, particularly during the first few years after planting and during hot, dry periods. It is generally better to water deeply and regularly rather than lightly and frequently.

The soil should remain moist but never waterlogged.

Fertilising

In spring, apply an organic fertiliser or a fertiliser suitable for flowering plants and climbers, following the manufacturer's recommended dosage. A good supply of organic matter encourages healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilisation, as this can encourage vigorous leaf growth at the expense of flowers.

Pests and diseases

Clematis are generally robust plants but can occasionally be affected by aphids, mites, slugs and snails, and powdery mildew. Fungal problems can also occur in conditions of excessive humidity and poor air circulation.

Good drainage, adequate ventilation and a suitable growing position help keep plants healthy.

Protecting the base of the plant

One of the most important points when growing Clematis is to keep the root zone cool and shaded, while allowing the upper part of the plant to receive plenty of light.

Organic mulch can be used to protect the roots and retain soil moisture during the summer. Low-growing perennials or ground-cover plants can also be planted around the base to provide natural shade.
