Asimina triloba 'Susquehanna', also known as Susquehanna Pawpaw, is a prized pawpaw variety selected by Neal Peterson from a plant in the collection of Blandy Experimental Farm in Virginia. It is particularly appreciated for the quality of its fruit, which is characterized by large size, abundant flesh and very few seeds.

The fruits of Susquehanna are large and fleshy, with medium-yellow flesh, a firm and creamy texture, and a sweet, rich and aromatic flavour typical of pawpaw. The variety contains approximately 4% seeds by weight and, in trials conducted by Kentucky State University, produced fruits with an average weight of around 185 grams.

CHARACTERISTICS:
The fruit ripens between late summer and early autumn. In trials carried out in Kentucky, Susquehanna is classified as a late-ripening variety, with harvesting generally taking place towards the end of September. The actual ripening period may naturally vary depending on the climate and growing area.

Asimina triloba is a fruit tree native to North America that can be grown in both full sun and partial shade, preferring fertile, moist and well-drained soils. The plant develops large green leaves which turn a distinctive golden-yellow in autumn, making it attractive also as an ornamental fruit tree.

For good fruit production, it is important to note that Susquehanna is not self-fertile. To encourage cross-pollination, it is recommended to grow another genetically different variety of Asimina triloba nearby.

A deciduous fruit tree with an upright, generally pyramidal habit, it can reach approximately 4.5–6 m in height, with a similar spread. In spring, it produces distinctive purplish-brown flowers, while its large green leaves turn a beautiful golden-yellow in autumn.
