Description
Asteraceae / Compositae family Sowing: in seedbeds in February-March. Outdoors in April-May. Transplanting: outdoors in May in well-fertilized soil, abundantly watered. Spacing: for home cultivation, 1-1.20 m apart in all directions. 60 cm between rows along the row. Advice: pick firm, not too ripe flower heads. The plant can last for 3-5 years. The lateral shoots (carducci) should be detached from the main plant in September-October and in January-February. They can be eaten in the kitchen like cardoons. In the rotation, do not follow with species belonging to the same Asteraceae family (chicory, lettuce, etc.) Seed required: 3-4g per m2 in seedbeds.
ATTENTION: It is important to emphasize that growing artichokes is not easy. It is important to vernalize the seed (you can put it in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks or in the freezer for a day). Sowing should then be done 40-45 days before transplanting, preferably in perforated containers. Then place the containers in a germination chamber for a week at a temperature of 15°C. Once this time has passed, spread the containers in a semi-shaded greenhouse.
